Long Tail Cast On

The Long Tail Cast On is one of the most popular ways in knitting to get the initial stitches on the needles.

I taught a beginning knitting class last night, and it was sooo much fun! But we’d had an interesting discussion around the table at Yarntiques about what to teach next. While the most common thing to learn first is typically a basic knit stitch, what happens if our students get home and the stitches somehow fall off the needles? Do I really want to have their stitches cast on for them? They’d be stuck at home without a cast on paddle!

So, it was decided I would teach the cast on first, even though it’s more complicated. I chose the Long Tail, because once you “get it”, it’s easy and fast. But I was concerned my class would forget until next time. So, I put a little video up on YouTube, walking them through the Long Tail Cast On. I hope this video helps to make it simple for you!
